Fotografiereis New York City 2011

Groet,

Joris Maas Visuals - November 2011.

JORIS MAAS VISUALS

Web Videos (or Webisodes)

To make webvideo's yourself there are several forums on the internet that can help you with the idea/script/filming and final editting of the video production. I will write some information and links soon in this topic (i am currently learning the basics myself how to do and set it up, it takes more time then i thought to master it myself i think, this is why there are a lot of crewmembers involved in the bigger webseries).

I am a member of the online (award winning) Webserie "The Guild" were I also made a Forum group about making webseries (which can be found here: http://community.watchtheguild.com/group/creatingwebepisodes). This Webserie made me to learn more about the phenomenon "Webserie" and the viewing of other productions as well. For me, it would be the ultimate goal to write a script, producing/shooting the video content and editing it in order to show it to the big public. There is a long way to go but it would be perfect for me, photography and video nicely balanced in an every day-job.

Panorama photography

Today, april 7th, i am going to make some panorama photo's. I will use my Canon Eos 450 with the 17-40 4.0 L in manual mode and fixed aperture. Exposure time will be on automatic. I will use a Manfrotto 455B tripod with a 056 Tripod head.

The idea is to center the frontlens exactly above the column of the tripod in order to get every picture shot from the same position when repositioning the camera from left to right or from right to left. This way, merging all pictures will be easy. The camera will be re-positioned on 2/3 of the previous picture. The 1/3 overlap will make sure you have enough image-space to move the pictures in position in order to stitch to 1 complete panorama. [          [  x  ]     [  x  ]     [  x  ]     [ x  ]        ]      (Something like this where [           ] is the single image and x the overlap part when shooting).

When i have the the panorama's done i will link them here.

Time Lapse Photography and Stop Motion

I am practising "Time Lapse" photography at this moment (I photograph a scene for a pretty long time in order to make 1-2 minute video's, hundreds or thousands of photographs for just a couple of minutes of film). I will use my Canon Eos 450D with 17-40L lens and an Intervalometer, a device that enables timed photography (for example, you can set it up that the camera makes 1 picture every 10 seconds during 2 hours).

The result is a big collection with a sequence of photographs which can be exported in several movie formats. The program i use is Apple Quicktime (Pro). One of my first try-outs can be watched here on Vimeo.com: http://www.vimeo.com/11155868

Also check out my channel on Vimeo: http://www.vimeo.com/webseries .

I am currently busy with Stop Motion tests, it looks a bit like Time Lapse but this means making photographs of an animation movie (for example a clip with moving toys or puppets). The first Stop Motion video i made was a short clip with my business cards that multiplied themselves rapidly. I took about 400 businesscards which i dropped down on a piece of black cloth (my mini table top). Everytime i dropped a new card i made a new picture (so i took 400 pictures in a row for it). Fun to do and i can imagine getting better in this type of photography will broaden your creativity (even business-wise maybe).

I will keep you informed and update this post with new made Timelapse and Stopmotion content when i finish new material.

Making In-game videoclips + Windows Movie Maker

In the past years i have been recording in-game clips of 30 seconds which i put together in Windows Movie Maker (standard in Windows XP and Vista). I used Fraps (http://www.fraps.com/) for recording the clips. You can watch those video's in the bottom of this page.

At this moment i am saving up some euro's for a Canon DSLS (a Canon Eos5D Mark II is my wish, but a Eos 7D or even 550D will do the job as well). To make a step to digital video as a photographer is not that hard since both worlds have a lot in common. I used to film a lot as well on compact camera's i took with me during trips and so on.

Also read my articles about Time Lapse and Stop Motion .

Other programs are Adobe Premiere® and Apple Final Cut Pro®.

Photography

Photography,

it certainly takes a big part of my time in my life, i am thinking about creating new images every day in a matter of fact and reading about it on the internet or local libraray. Photography (digital, but analog as well) is hot! And so is Film making...for many very related to photography.

The step to broaden your view from photography to video is partially stimulated due to the digital era....where making video is cheaper and less time consuming overall (i am talking about the actual video itself, not the grading and editing which is a hard part if you are mostly trained in photography only). At this moment i am finding out how to make movies with photo's (Time Lapse and Stop Motion). When i am more experienced in it and made some more examples, i will put it on Youtube or Vimeo and link the video here.

What is your experience with photography in your life? Please let me know by leaving a comment! Are you a professional photographer yourself? Please response and write your story about your life as photographer. When (or why) did you become a photographer? What did you have to do to survive in a world with a lot of competition? How are you prepaired for the future with more and more people owning their own DSLR?

Greetings,

Joris Maas
